Obiettivi formativi

The course intends to provide the basic tools for the description and analysis of German morphology, paying particular attention to the centrality of the verb. First, the morphological-inflectional properties of the verb will be investigated. Subsequently we will see the effects of verbal morphology in the morphosyntactic field with regard to both the sentence structure and in relation to certain sentence types in which voice are foregrounded as in passive sentences, mood and modality in hypothetical sentences, or the tense in temporal sentences. Finally, the complex theme of word formation will be addressed, from the point of view of derivation by means of affixes, of conversion, again mainly of a verbal type, and finally of composition and multiword expressions. On this basis, students will be provided with the essential ingredients to proceed with the contrastive analysis of these aspects of the linguistic structure which, in addition to Italian and German, will also involve other languages and first of all English, that can be considered today the global language. The contrastive analysis will be carried out by the students through an individual work defined during the course.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Knowledge and understanding

The students will be required to describe the morphological structures of the German verb, with particular reference to the effects in the morphosyntactic field, and to explain with an adequate terminology the salient aspects concerning the relevance of the role played by the verb as a central element of the sentence especially in relation to the passive sentences, the hypothetical period, temporal sentences, etc. The students will be able to provide an overall representation of the word formation of German, as well as to adequately outline some aspects of the contrastive analysis of German in comparison with Italian and other languages and first of all English.

Applying knowledge and understanding and making judgements

The students will be able to develop autonomy and flexibility in understanding and analyzing the morphological structures of the German verb and its fundamental role in the sentence in relation above all to voice, the hypothetical period, temporal sentences, etc. Furthermore, students should be able to analyze complex German words with the help of the tools traditionally adopted in word formation such as the analysis into morphological constituents. Accordingly, they will answer questions of an interpretive kind and not based on superficial factual knowledge on the German word-formation system, thereby developing autonomous analyses on that and also adopting a contrastive perspective.

Communication skills

The students will have to show to be able to comparatively and critically examine subjects and arguments comprehending concepts, structure and contexts in an adequate manner.

Learning skills

The students will have to show how to autonomously identify ways for enlarging their knowledge of the discipline, making use of notions and methodologies of linguistics, both in a synchronic and in a contrastive perspective, and of the contiguous disciplines. They will show where to search for materials and sources necessary for this goal and how to use bibliographical tools, both in traditional form and on an electronic support.

Knowledge and skills will be verified by means of an oral examination based on questions. The preparation will be considered adequate (with a vote expressed in a scale from 18 to 30), if the students will demonstrate to express themselves in an appropriate way using the necessary terminology; if they will show familiarity with the various topics and problems discussed during the course in an autonomous way – i.e., without depending in a pedestrian way on the presentation of the topics offered by the texts; if – among these – they will be able to point out relations and interdependencies; if they will be able to consider them at their respective level of analysis, domain and conceptual relevance.

Furthermore, the students will develop in an autonomous way some aspects of the contrastive analysis of German, presenting the results by means of an individual contribution (a short essay) sent to the teacher before the exam.

At any rate, in order to be admitted to the examination, it will be necessary to pass the test for the language certification (test of lectorate). See below under "Supporting activities".

With regard to the assessment of the German language skills, the following three principles apply:

  • All students who take a module of German language and linguistics are expected to attend a course of lectorate and/or pass the corresponding exam.
  • All students who have already passed the exam of an intermediate course of lectorate or have already attended an advanced course are expected to attend an advanced course, which by its nature aims at strengthening already acquired language skills (with the help of readings, conversations, translations, etc.), and to pass the corresponding exam.
  • Both principles are valid indipendently of the program (BA or MA) and of the year of enrollment: what is relevant is the level of language skills and the lectorate course attended in the past.

NOTA BENE: Students who take this module as Further Language Skills (TAF E-F) are required to prepare only the test for the language certification which will end with the note "Approved/Not approved".

The annual course of lectorate is conceived as a support for preparing the test for the language certification which has to be passed before the oral examination. The lectorate, held by a mother-tongue collaborator, is not obligatory but warmly recommended especially for beginners, and is specifically aimed at students who need to acquire or reinforce their competence in German. It normally starts in October and runs for the whole year.

For information, please contact Christina Martina Rekelj (christinamartina.rekelj@unito.it).

In addition, there will also be a tutorship held by a senior student who will accompany the students in preparing the contents of the course and the short essay. The students are warmly encouraged to participate in the tutorship, in order to get access to information and materials (texts, slides, etc.) distributed during the course.
