ATTENZIONE!

The undergraduate lettorato  exams are held three times a year - in June, September and January. Since there are various types of lettorato exams, students should consult the notice on Lettorato di Inglese 2017-18 entitled Lettorato di Inglese: Appello di … before enrolling in an exam. It provides important information regarding exam dates and special instructions for each exam.

A. Lingua e Traduzione Inglese: Prova di Lettorato (for students enrolled in STU149, LET0492 or LET0730 with Prof. Borgogni); Lingua e Traduzione Inglese Prima Annualità: Prova di Lettorato (for students enrolled in the first year of Asia e Africa STU160); Lingua Inglese: Prova di Lettorato (for students enrolled in DAMS SCF0453) This exam is obligatory for all students who have Lingua e Traduzione Inglese or Lingua Inglese in their piano carriera.  It is a B2-level exam and consists in a dictation, grammar and vocabulary exercises, reading comprehension exercises and a 120-150-word composition. Students may use either a monolingual or a bilingual dictionary during all parts of the exam, except the dictation. The lettorato mark will be out of 30, and will be averaged with the mark obtained from the LT/Lingua Inglese professors. In order to pass the exam, a minimum mark of 18/30 is required in the two parts of the exam (lettorato and translation). The final mark will be registered online by the LT/Lingua Inglese professors.

 B. Lingua Straniera Inglese LET0420 This is a B2-level exam and consists in a dictation, grammar and vocabulary exercises, reading comprehension exercises and a 120-150-word composition based on specific readings. A handout pack entitled "Selected Readings for LET0420 students" is available on the Lettorato di Inglese page and at Torino Copy in via Roero di Cortanze (behind the university). These readings change from year to year. Students may use either a monolingual or a bilingual dictionary during all parts of the exam, except the dictation. Students will receive a pass/fail (superata/non superata) mark for this exam, and in order to pass, students must complete 70% of the exam correctly. The mark will be registered online by Prof Borgogni.

 C. Lingua Straniera Inglese Secondo livello LET0470 This C1-level exam is primarily for Philosophy students who have already passed the Lingua Straniera LET0420 exam or Lingua e Traduzione Inglese. It involves listening to a portion of a university lecture and then writing a summary of the lecture, as well as completing grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises. Students are allowed to use a monolingual dictionary for the summary. Students will receive a pass/fail (superata/non superata) mark for this exam, and in order to pass, they must complete 60% of the exam correctly. The mark will be registered online by Prof Borgogni. Due to the advanced level of English required to pass the exam, students are strongly encouraged to attend the lettorato lessons and to sit the exam well before their expected graduation date.

 D. Lingua e Traduzione Inglese  Seconda Annualità: Prova di Lettorato (for studentes enrolled in STU0195, LIN0395 or LIN0020 with Prof. Adami) This C1-level exam is for students of Asian and African studies who have already passed the lettorato exam for Lingua e Traduzione Inglese: Primo Anno. It involves listening to a portion of a university lecture and then writing a summary of the lecture, as well as completing grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises. Students are allowed to use a monolingual dictionary for the summary. Students will receive a lettorato mark out of 30, and a minimum mark of 18/30 is required to pass the exam. The final mark will be registered online by Prof Adami. Due to the advanced level of English required to pass the exam, students are strongly encouraged to attend the lettorato lessons and to sit the exam well before their expected graduation date.

Please note: Philosophy and History students are not allowed to take Lingua e Traduzione Inglese and Lingua Straniera Inglese LET0420 since these two exams are of the same level. Philosophy students who wish to take two English lettorato exams can choose to take Lingua Straniera Inglese Secondo Livello LET0470. In some cases, History students may be allowed to take Lingua Straniera Inglese Secondo Livello LET0470, but only if they have received authorization to do so from the History department.

Please note: Students who would like to sit the lettorato exam must have inserted the corresponding exam in their piano carriera. Exceptions will be made only in the following cases:

 - students who have received the Attendance Point for attending the lettorato course;

- students with the following certificates: FCE, IELTS min 5.5, TOEFL IBT min 72 for exams A and B above; CAE, Proficiency, IELTS min. 6.5, TOEFL IBT min. 79 for exams C and D above. Original copies of the certificates must be shown to the lettori.

Students in these circumstances must also send an email to sarah.birdsall@unito.it at least 2 weeks prior to the exam, indicating their full name, matriculation number, the exam code and the reason why they cannot enrol online.

Please note: Mobile phones and other electronic devices are not allowed during any of the lettorato exams. Students are thus encouraged to leave them at home the day of the exam. If this is not possible, students must bring their phones to the exam in a sealed envelope and deposit them at the lettori's desk. Anyone not complying with this rule will automatically be asked to leave the room and their exam will be annulled.  The lettori do not assume any responsibility for theft of or damage to personal items.

Note

This notice mainly concerns undergraduate students; for information on lettorato courses for the master's degree, see the website Culture moderne comparate, at the page Avvisi docenti Lezioni.

Students who are interested in attending a lettorato course need to take the placement test, which will be held on 5 October 2017 (Surname A-L 3pm , Surname M-Z 4.30pm) in PN Room 1. Students must enrol in the placement test and soon the enrolment page will be opened, together with instructions on how to enrol.

The sole purpose of the placement test is to determine the student's level of knowledge of English and place him/her in the most appropriate course (Lower Intermediate-A2, Intermediate-B1 or Upper Intermediate-B2). In no way does the placement test substitute the lettorato exam. Even those students not necessarily interested in attending a lettorato are encouraged to take the test, so that they have a clear idea of their language level. The placement test score is valid for one year only.

Students of Lingue e Culture dell'Asia e dell'Africa who need to take the 2nd year lettorato exam and first-degree Philosophy students who need to take Lingua Straniera Secondo Livello LET0470 do not need to take the placement test. They can enrol directly in an Advanced course as of 10 October 2017.

Students interested in attending the lettorato lessons who have an official certificate of English (PET, FCE, CAE, Proficiency, IELTS, TOEFL or PTE) do not need to take the placement test (they must, however, take the final lettorato exam!). They need to enrol in the ESONERO Test di Livello and present their original certificates to the lettori on 5 ottobre at 5pm in PN 1. Please note that the Esonero exempts students from taking the placement test but not from taking the final lettorato exam and that only those students with certificates who are interested in attending the lettorato lessons need to enrol in the Esonero. Those who cannot be present on that day must to send an email to sarah.birdsall@unito.it by that date and include the following information: name/surname, matriculation number, degree course, type of certificate and level. They will then have to bring their original certificates to the first lesson.

The results of the placement test will be posted on the Lettorato di Inglese page by 10 ottobre 2017.  At that point it will be possible to enrol in one English lettorato. Students holding a B2-level certificate (PET with Distinction, FCE, CAE or IELTS min 5.5) can enrol in an Upper Intermediate course, while those holding a B1-level certificate (PET, PET with Merit, IELTS 4.5-5) PET with Merit, IELTS 4-5) may enrol in an Intermediate course.

To enrol, remember to log in first, then select a lettorato course that corresponds to your level and click on 'Registrati al corso'. Please note that the icon will not appear if you are not logged in. Course enrolment will begin the same day in which the placement test results are posted.

Attendance Point

As far as first-degree students are concerned, those who participate actively in at least 75% of the lessons of the course over the course of the year and complete all required homework assignments will receive an Attendance Point. This extra point will be added to the lettorato exam mark and is valid for two years

Please note: Upper Intermediate students who have a B2, C1 or C2 level certificate (see acceptable certificates listed above) and attend 75% of the lessons in the first semester will receive the Attendance point in January. The same is true for Advanced students who have a C1 or C2 level certificate.

Notices and university email messages

All notices concerning the English lettorati will be posted on the Lettorato di Inglese page. It is also very important for students to check their university email regularly, as important messages concerning courses and exams may be sent to students via email.
